LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 28, 2024) – Laketown Township Beach will be a little bigger in 2024, but when residents will enjoy that extra space remains to be seen.
During its monthly meeting, the Board of Trustees of the Allegan County community approved the purchase of 3.17 acres adjoining the southeast end of the township’s oldest park, with most of the cost coming from a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant the municipality received in 2017 of $640,000. Other sources include a donation from owner JP Oosterbaan, as well as $1,453 from the township for covering closing and transfer fees. Over a several-year period, the township has picked up three parcels of about three tenths of an acre each, as well as another of three quarters of an acre.
“We have been working to acquire land near the township beach since 2016. This is our fifth and largest acquisition. It is important to acquire as much land as possible near Lake Michigan for our residents.” – Laketown Township Manager Al Meshkin
Since it became a public park nearly a century ago (1926), Laketown Township Beach consists of around 7.6 acres at the western end of 142nd Avenue. Parks and Recreation Commission officials will work on plans over the next few years to incorporate the new parcel, which doesn’t touch Lake Michigan but has a shoreline view, into the park’s overall scheme.
