LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 20, 2024) – It was an eventful first meeting for the newest member of the Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission Board this past Wednesday.
Appointed by Township trustees last week to fill the vacancy created by last month’s resignation of Jeremy Van Hoeven, Tom Hoekman and his fellow four P & R Commission Board members recommended to the full board an allocation of around $30,000 to tear down the 85-year-old Huyser House off of 64th Street. Hoekman had been on a special committee that recommended demolition of the structure due to prohibitive restoration costs, and efforts by a resident to take over operations of the residence and turn it into a long-term rental were thwarted. If the recommendations are approved by the trustees next month, demolition efforts would begin shortly, with the P & R Commission looking at ideas for future use of the 102-acre property.
Other matters taken up by this board include a proposed cost-of-living wage hike for its members as part of a fiscal 2025 budget submission, in the wake of the township board approving pay increases for themselves last week; named Brad Laninga to chair the board for 2024; and recommended to the township board approval of a $7,900 bid to paint and caulk the Old Township Hall off of 142nd Avenue.
