HOLLAND, MI (Jan. 16, 2024) – There is no off-season for scammers, and no area is apparently immune from those wishing to fleece unsuspecting victims.
Recently, the Northampton County, Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Office reported a series of calls in which a male caller, who identifies himself as a Lieutenant, instructs residents to transfer money due to them missing a court hearing or jury duty.
Detective Jason Valenzuela handles such complaints for the Holland Department of Public Safety’s Police Services unit.
A tell-tale sign of a scam is the way the scamster wants the victim to dole out the fines.
Most police agencies will not call residents and solicit money, and anyone who does get such a call is asked to just hang up on the caller and phone their local police agency through a generally known non-emergency number, or just call 9-1-1.
