ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 20, 2023) – A long-time symbol in Allegan is moving.
On Wednesday morning, the 120-year-old statue of a Union Civil War soldier will be shifting from its current location at the southeast corner of Courthouse Square off of Chestnut Street in the County Seat. However, the move, which will take place between 8 AM and 10:30 AM, won’t be a long one, as the figure will now be on that square’s northeast corner.
The shift is being made as part of the county’s effort to renovate and enlarge the 48th Circuit and 57th District courthouse for accommodating a third seat on the circuit court bench, to take effect in January of 2025. Also part of that effort is to relocate the County Clerk/Register of Deeds office, as well as that of County Treasurer and County Drain Commissioner, from the Chestnut Street building to the Dumont Lake county administration building off of 122nd Avenue in Allegan Township.
Balking against that move is County Clerk/Register of Deeds Bob Genetski, who is among the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the County Board claiming that the move goes against the state constitution’s mandate that these principal office must be within the county seat’s city limits.
The lawsuit, which was filed in May, will be heard through mediation this coming February.
