OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 19, 2023) – The main road between Holland and Grand Haven was snarled for hours on Monday night after a semi rolled over and an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured as a result.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Keith Biros, a southbound truck on US-31 at Port Sheldon Street wasn’t able to stop in time around 8:45 PM for a red light ahead due to what the unnamed driver said was poor visibility in inclement weather. After striking an eastbound vehicle, the semi veered left through the median, slammed head on to a northbound vehicle that had stopped for the signal, and then continued left onto the shoulder before overturning. Biros said that all of the motorists involved in the initial crash suffered just minor injuries.
While it took several hours before US-31 was cleared in both directions, an unnamed deputy who was handling traffic control was hit by a northbound vehicle on US-31 at Bingham Street around 9:25 PM. That driver involved, a 42-year-old Grand Haven man, said that he couldn’t stop his vehicle due to icy road conditions. The deputy, who was wearing a traffic vest while his own cruiser had its emergency lighting fully activated, was taken to an undisclosed “local hospital” for treatment of injuries sustained; his condition was not immediately revealed.
The entire incident remains under investigation.
