GENEVA TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 22, 2023) – Law enforcement officers in northwest Van Buren County had a early call to action for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in enforcing drunken driving laws.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Greg Pentland, deputies on a routine patrol east of South Haven around 3:30 PM on Wednesday spotted a vehicle committing several “moving violations.” When the prowl car attempted to pull that vehicle over, a short pursuit ensured along County Road 681, 16th Avenue and 60th Street before the suspect lost control of his vehicle, which ended up in a ditch.
The suspect, a 37-year-old Clarkston man, then jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to run north, but thanks in part to a Sheriff’s canine, the man was eventually tracked down several hundred yards away and taken into custody without further incident. Pentland said that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and after a brief hospital stay, he was taken to the Van Buren County Jail to await arraignment on several charges.
The Bangor Police Department assisted deputies in handling this incident, which remains under investigation.
