HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 22, 2023) – An 8th grade social studies teacher from Holland Middle School has won a local honor.
The Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution tabbed Derek Orme as its Outstanding Teacher of American History for Academic 2024. According to the national DAR, full-time instructors from grades 5-12 of history, along with related fields such as social studies, government and citizenship education, are considered for this award based on demonstrated excellence in readily sharing an incisive knowledge of American History, a commitment to students, fostering a spirit of patriotism and loyal support to the US, relating history to modern life and events, and requiring high academic standards at all times from their students.
This was a deserving honor for Orme, according to Holland School Superintendent Nick Cassidy.
Twelve high school seniors from Lakeshore and vicinity schools also earned Good Citizen Awards during the local DAR’s Education Achievement Awards Night in Zeeland nine days ago.
