POLKTON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 14, 2023) – Nobody was hurt, but a crash involving a semi and a bridge snarled traffic on I-96 near Coopersville for some time on Monday night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, a 72-year-old Ithaca man was eastbound on that freeway, driving a semi carrying two dump style trailers, around 7:45 PM when the rear trailer smashed into the 68th Avenue overpass. A pickup, driven by a 68-year-old Grand Rapids man, was behind the big rig, and in an attempt to avoid the sudden debris caused by the sudden collision ahead, the motorist lost control of his vehicle, which then went off of the roadway and rolled over into a ditch.
While both drivers involved were uninjured, only one lane of eastbound I-96 remained open as crews cleaned up the scene. Smoes didn’t say if the overpass sustained any structural damage.
The incident remains under investigation.
