PEOSTA, IA (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 8, 2023) – A Lakeshore fire department is getting some help in addressing an agricultural safety hazard.
According to insurer Nationwide, 15 persons lost their lives last year in at least 42 grain entrapments, the highest in more than a decade. Therefore, the company’s annual Grain Bin Safety campaign, in conjunction with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, is awarding grain rescue tubes and training to 60 fire departments across the country, with the Overisel Township Fire Department the only recipient in Michigan listed.
“Grain bin accidents continue to be a critical issue facing the agriculture industry. We are proud to have supplied these important resources to 60 more rural fire departments in partnership with the many sponsors involved in our grain bin safety efforts. However, the work will not be complete until we can put a stop to these needless accidents altogether. Thank you to the first responders who play such an important role in supporting the agriculture community.” – Brad Liggett, president of Agribusiness at Nationwide
This latest round of competitive grants has raised the total amount of awards from this program to 332 fire departments across 32 states over the past decade.
