WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 8, 2023) – The numbers are in for the biannual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
On October 28th, nearly 600 thousand pounds of old, unwanted and expired medications were collected at more than 4600 sites nationwide, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Of that number, over 62,000 pounds from just under 500 sites in Michigan, Ohio and northern Kentucky were gathered, according to the Detroit Field Division that has jurisdiction over that region.
Locally, Holland Hospital reported on its social media outlets that 300 pounds of unwanted prescription medicines and syringes were collected at its main Michigan Avenue campus. While numbers from Corewell Health-Zeeland Hospital haven’t been disclosed, its Pharmacy Manager, Melanie Weytkow, says that any amount gathered is a good amount.
While the national drug take back initiative runs in the spring and fall, many locations have year-round collections, including the Holland Department of Public Safety Police Services Headquarters, located in the 58th District Court Building off of West 8th Street.
