Julie Esther Holman died suddenly in Narok, Kenya as a result of a head-on collision while on a medical mission with Kenya Hope. She was accompanying Kenya Hope directors, Dave and Joy Mueller to the Nkoisusu Hope Center in remote Kenya, where she was prepared to give immunizations to children that day.
Julie was born in Tacloban City, Philippines to missionary parents, Stephen (Steve) and Kristine (Kris) Holman. Early in her childhood, Julie placed her faith and trust in Jesus Christ and always desired to serve the Lord in whatever she did. Julie was known as a very competent and compassionate nurse by her colleagues. She leaves a legacy of positive joy, just as she was a joy to her family.
Julie graduated from Jenison High School (2009), and Cedarville University (2013) with a degree in nursing. Just this past August, she also graduated from Chamberlain University with a Masters of Science in nursing and had passed the board exam to be a Family Nurse Practitioner. Since 2013, she has worked in the neurology department at Butterworth Hospital, the Surgical ICU at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, and finally, at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago as part of the ICU resource team. Julie was looking forward to making regular medical mission trips to serve with the enhanced skills and knowledge she had gained. In 2018, she made trips to Bangladesh, serving in a missionary hospital with Samaritan’s Purse at the height of the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Julie is survived by her parents, as well as sisters Anne, Elisabeth (Jacob), Karen (Caleb), along with nephews Louie and Cole, and niece Noa. She is also survived by uncles and aunts: Becky and Gene Schnuckel, Joe and Lori Anderson, Mark Holman, and Carol Holman. Cousins include David and Eric (Jen) Schnuckel, Katie Sciscenti (Michael), Ben Anderson, Sarah Shimada (Kosuke), Meredith Holman, Saskia, Clio and Viveca Holman. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Wayne and Vangie Anderson and Stan and Jean Holman and uncle, Tim Holman.
Julie’s memorial service will take place November 11 at 11:00 am at Immanuel Church of Holland, Michigan with Rev. Alyn Goossen officiating. A lunch will be provided immediately afterward at the church. Julie will be laid to rest at Georgetown Cemetery the same afternoon.
