Five Hope College student-athletes have been selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week: senior Olivia Fiebing in volleyball, senior Cameron Hamilton, senior Rebecca Markham in women’s cross country, senior Elijah Smith in football and junior Ewan Tiongson.
Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central HS) is the MIAA Speciality of the Week for the first time in her career. The libero helped the Flying Dutch win three of four matches last week, including two against nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Calvin University. Fiebing averaged 17.8 digs and 2.25 aces over 15 sets. The political science major served a season-high six aces and collected 24 digs during a five-set victory at ninth-ranked Calvin on Saturday. Hope also defeated Alma College in three sets and seventh-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in three sets.
Hamilton (Libertyville, Illinois / Libertyville HS) is the MIAA Women’s Diver of the Week for the first time this season and the third time in her career. The political science major helped the Flying Dutch defeat both Kalamazoo College and The University of Olivet by posting the top scores on both boards. Hamilton scored 232.05 points on 1-meter and 220.28 points on 3-meter.
Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) is the MIAA Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career. The civil engineering major earned her first MIAA individual title and helped the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch claim a share of their eighth consecutive MIAA team championship on Saturday. Markham clocked a winning 6K time of 21 minutes, 3.8 seconds at Three Fires Golf Club in Holland.
Smith (Hastings, Michigan / Hastings) is the MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. The running back and mechanical engineering major rushed for a season-high 195 yards and two touchdowns during a 63-17 victory at Kalamazoo College on Saturday. Smith scored on touchdown runs of 53 and 4 yards and aided Hope’s season-high 459 rushing yards. The 459 yards were the fourth-most in an NCAA Division III game this season.
Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) is the MIAA Men’s Diver of the Week for the first time this season and the second time in his career. With Tiongson sweeping both boards, the Flying Dutchmen topped The University of Olivet and Kalamazoo College on Friday. Tiongson totaled 245.55 points on the 1-meter board and 229.73 points on the 3-meter board. The 3-meter score was 60 points better than the nearest competitor.
