HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 21, 2023) – A couple from the Grand Rapids suburb of Wyoming were hospitalized following a collision between a sedan and a deer on Holland’s south side just before dawn on Saturday.
According to Department of Public Safety Captain of Administrative Services Bob Buursma, officers and other first responders were dispatched to I-196 near West 64th Street around 7:30 AM. That was where the sedan, driven by a 55-year-old man, with a 60-year-old woman as a front-seat passenger, crashed into the animal around the 46 mile marker of the westbound freeway. The deer went through the windshield and struck both persons, causing the vehicle to veer off of the roadway, through a right-of-way fence, and smash into a commercial building nearby.
Paramedics first took the couple to Holland Hospital, and they were then tranferred to Corewell Health-Butterworth Hospital in serious condition. Buursma added that neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.
