OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 5, 2023) – Authorities across Michigan aren’t waiting until School Bus Safety Week, which runs from October 16th through the 20th, to make sure that motorists obey the laws surrounding those vehicles taking students to and from their schools.
“Operation Safe Stop” will have extra patrols of officers, deputies and troopers looking for drivers who illegally pass school buses who have their flashers activated while youngsters climb on board or disembark. Those in blue or brown will also be working with local school district leaders in educational and enforcement initiatives for both drivers and students, according to Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker.
The initiative is aimed at cutting down on statewide numbers of over a thousand crashes involving school buses in 2022, including 81 at stops, with 38 serious injuries and one fatality. A one-day statewide survey conducted this past May indicated that there were 864 instances of illegal school bus passing.
