HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 5, 2023) – Holland Public Schools apparently confounded the experts.
The district announced preliminary student enrollment count numbers on Wednesday, as a total of 2,863 pupils were attending classes for the start of Academic 2024. According to district spokesman Jason Craner, it’s only the second time in three decades that Holland Schools had seen any increase in year-over-year enrollment.
“This year’s increase in the number of students at HPS is a testimony to the great things happening in the district. The Holland community is taking notice of our staff’s commitment to student success and the big opportunities we are able to provide students while maintaining a small-school feeling.” – Holland School Superintendent Nick Cassidy.
Holland added 44 students, as opposed to an outside projection firm’s forecast of a 65-pupil loss. Other local districts did not immediately disclose their student count numbers, as they have a 30-day window to adjust those figures, taking into account illnesses or other factors.
Public schools in Michigan are required to hold two student count days each academic year, with the first on the first Wednesday in October determining 90 percent of the per-pupil funding from the state, and the second on the first Wednesday in February accounting for the remaining 10 percent.
