NEW YORK CITY (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 29, 2023) – It was a successful dip into the waters for Bryan Huffman on Thursday.
The 50-year-old comprehensive ophthalmologist from Holland successfully completed the 20 Bridges Swim, a 28.5-mile, eight- to nine-hour counterclockwise effort around Manhattan Island under 20 bridges that connect the borough with other New York City entities and with New Jersey, in a time of seven hours, 37 minutes. He is now among more than 300 swimmers who have successfully accomplished this feat.
This comes after an attempt to swim across Lake Michigan from Mantiwoc, Wisconsin to Ludington last month was aborted due to mechanical issues involving his support boat. Just as in his Lake Michigan attempt, Huffman was looking to raise funds again for the Holland Aquatic Center Foundation, as he aims for a total of $50,000 for the year.
He has already swam across the English Channel, and looks to not only cross Lake Michigan, but the Catalina Channel near Los Angeles over the next three years.
In both August and September, ultra-marathon swimmer Jim Dwyer attempted and failed to complete planned crossings of Lake Michigan from Milwaukee to Grand Haven.
