ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 27, 2023) – A 21-year-old Allendale resident escaped substantial injury after what authorities are calling an “accidental explosion” at a residence just before dawn on Wednesday.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, an acetylene torch had been stored in the trunk of a vehicle parked in a garage at a home in the area of 68th Avenue near Sunset Drive, south of Lake Michigan Drive. Fuel from the torch apparently leaked out, and when the trunk was opened around 6:30 AM, an explosion ensued. The blast damaged two vehicles inside of the garage, along with causing structural damage, and Giovanna Huerta, who was nearby when the incident occurred, sustained only minor injuries.
Wildfong did not say if the victim needed more than just medical attention at the scene, or whether any citations would be issued, as the matter remains under investigation.
