Max was born in Petoskey, Michigan, on July 25, 1946, to John and Rachel (Hawkes) Grindle. After high school he served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam. He later went to The Salvation Army seminary training in Chicago. There he met lifelong friends, was trained and equipped to serve, and met his wife Betty Jean Wurtz. They married on January 7, 1978. They served together in several communities before retiring in 2012 to Zeeland, Michigan. Max was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Joy and Harold Shelby.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty, their daughter and her family Melissa & David Houser (Madeline, Maxim, Chloe) of Pensacola, Florida, their daughter and her family Lianne Crouthers (Aurora, Orion) of Grand Rapids, MI, his siblings: Darlus and William Kumpula, David and Sherry Grindle, John Brent and Linda Grindle, and many extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 23, 2023, at The Salvation Army Church, 104 Clover, Holland MI 49423. Visitation will be 12:00 noon-1:00 pm Saturday prior to the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Royal Oak, MI.
