Three Hope College student-athletes have been selected as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athletes of the Week: men’s soccer’s Daniel Hesselbein, volleyball’s Lauren Lee and volleyball’s Addie VanderWeide.
Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community HS) is the MIAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career.
The junior goalkeeper posted two shutouts and collected eight saves during two season-opening matches last week.
Hesselbein recorded five saves during a scoreless draw against St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The physical and health education major made three saves against No. 24-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at home.
VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) is the MIAA Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.
The junior outside hitter averaged 5.08 kills with a .345 attack percentage and 3.38 digs per set for the Flying Dutch during victories against St. Olaf College (Minn.), No. 23 ranked Otterbein University (Ohio) and No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis.
VanderWeide tied a Hope match record with 28 kills against WashU and became the fourth member of the Flying Dutch to accomplish the feat. VanderWeide also recorded 24 kills against Otterbein and 14 against St. Olaf.
Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline) is the MIAA Speciality Athlete of the Week for the third time in her career.
The sophomore setter averaged 11.08 assists and 2.06 digs per set over three matches last week in St. Louis, Missouri.
Lee totaled 56 assists against Otterbein, 51 against WashU and 37 against St. Olaf.
