Gordon Leroy Scherpenisse, age 81, of Zeeland, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 2, 2023 after a well-fought 3 year battle with cancer.
Gord served our country in the US Air Force from 1964-1968, following his schooling at Calvin College. He was a long-time member of Faith Reformed Church in Zeeland, where he served as Deacon and Elder. Gord retired from Herman Miller after 27 years. He loved nature, which his family saw through his passion for lawn care and feeding birds. He also enjoyed many other outdoor activities, such as biking and gardening.
Gord is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda; daughters: Carla (Daniel) Lydon, Amy (Kevin) Wozniak; grandchildren: Jared, Megan; siblings: Carol Scherpenisse, Mary (Ron) Waterloo, Edith (Ken) Timmer, Don (Deborah) Scherpenisse, Bob (Connie G.) Scherpenisse; siblings-in-law: Joan (Stan) Weir, Larry (Nancy) Ruster, Randy (Darlene) Ruster; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Lester & Angeline (Beimers) Scherpenisse; brother, Melvin Scherpenisse; in-laws, Harold & Nellie Ruster; siblings-in-law: John & Jeannie Ruster, Connie J. Scherpenisse; nieces: Sheri VanBruggen, Faith Webster; and nephew, Jeffrey Weir.
A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. A funeral service, with Rev. David Smits officiating, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Faith Reformed Church, 220 West Central Ave., Zeeland. The service will be livestreamed and can be accessed through https://faithzeeland.org/watch-listen/. (A direct link will be added next week). Burial will be in North Holland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland.
