OVERISEL TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 1, 2023) – A 14-year-old Zeeland boy lost his life in a single-vehicle crash south of the county line on Friday morning.
According to Allegan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ross Mysliwiec, central dispatch received a call shortly after 6 AM of a vehicle ablaze on 137th Avenue near 44th Street, and that the vehicle appeared to have crashed into a tree. When first responders arrived, they did find that vehicle fully engulfed in flames, and after bringing the fire under control, they discovered the single occupant inside. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Allegan County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A statement from Zeeland Public Schools: “It is with heavy hearts that we inform our community of the passing of a high school student as a result of a fatal crash reported early this morning in Allegan County. More information will be released as it becomes available. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, no further details are being provided at this time. Support for students and staff will be available Tuesday and throughout the week next week. If you feel that your student is having difficulty coping with this event, please let us know as soon as possible.”
A preliminary look into the matter indicated that the Jeep Wrangler was westbound on 137th when it left the roadway, apparently at a high rate of speed, and slammed head on into a tree. The incident remains under investigation.
