COVERT TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 27, 2023) – As the effort to restart the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert continues, the impact of its closure on the economy of the vicinity near South Haven will be disclosed.
The Palisades Economic Recovery Team is presenting a final draft of its Economic Assessment of the closure on Monday afternoon. According to Market Van Buren, the non-profit economic stimulus group behind this effort, the report is expected to detail how the closure has already effected the community’s economy, and what can be done to mitigate associated adverse issues moving forward. It culminates extensive research into this situation by the Economic Growth Institute and related entities, and the unveiling of this final draft is meant to solicit public input before the report is submitted to public and civil leaders in the region.
Holtec International is looking for federal grant money in an effort to restart energy-generating operations at Palisades, using new equipment and machinery to replace the old setup at the site. Environmental opponents claim that no new technology could safely overcome the ecological risks of restarting the plant.
The public is invited to observe the 1 PM Monday virtual release of this report’s final draft, with an online link to more information through Van Buren County’s website here.
