UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 24, 2023) – A new high school football season along the Lakeshore kicks off on Thursday evening.
Two different stories take place at Holland Christian High, as the Maroons host city rival Holland. It’s the first game for the Dutch since abandoning the campaign last fall after four lopsided losses, including a 58-0 debacle to the visiting Maroons at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium, due to low roster numbers. While this is the first game as head coach for Holland Christian’s Dave Abberger.

Meanwhile, there’s a gridiron doubleheader at Zeeland Stadium, with the Zeeland West Dux entertaining Stevensville-Lakeshore at 6 PM, followed by the Zeeland East Chix home to Williamston. The district’s two athletic directors came up with the idea of a twin-bill, according to East’s Josh Glenrum, followed by West’s Jordan Bandstra.
Other match ups include Buchanan at Saugatuck, with Eric Van Swol describing the action from the new turf installed in Jarvis Memorial Field at 7:40 PM on The Lakeshore’s 92 7 The Van; Grand Ledge at West Ottawa; Hamilton at Plainwell; and in eight-man action, Fennville at St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake.
