OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 23, 2023) – As a new school year begins, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners weighed in on childhood vaccines.
During Tuesday night’s biweekly business meeting, the panel considered a resolution affirming the rights of parents and guardians to not have their school aged children vaccinated, emphasizing individual freedoms and rights of parents, and recommending that information on vaccines for schools and childcare programs include that of available exemptions and waivers from requirements. Board vice chairwoman Sylvia Rhodea of Allendale.
Such a resolution is not be binding per state law, but after it passed by a 9-2 vote, copies will be sent to lawmakers whose district includes any portion of Ottawa County, as well as all 83 county clerks statewide.
Among other items on the meeting agenda was a request by Sheriff Steve Kempker for a Justice Assistance Grant Program application so that his department can purchase a $52,000 long deployment camera trailer. Such a tool, borrowed from the Michigan State Police last year, helped curtail violence incidents in off-campus housing near Grand Valley State University.
That measure, despite some public comment on privacy and racial profiling concerns, was passed unanimously by the board.
