ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 21, 2023) – Two proposed downtown redevelopments, water fees and art highlight Monday night’s scheduled Zeeland City Council meeting.
The developments seeking approval is a three-story mixed use structure at the northeast corner of Main and State avenues, as well as a smaller, similar use structure on East Main between Elm and Church streets. The first proposal is for a 9,200-9,500 square foot per floor building that would have retail on the ground floor, with residential and office units above. It would also include 48-space on-site parking that would be leased to the city on a 50-year agreement. The second includes a passageway, and involves 5,200 square feet in dimension, along with the city seeking a $70,000 state Land Bank Authority grant to reimburse the developer for demolition costs.
Council will also consider a water connection fee proposal that the Zeeland BPW says would sufficiently cover operating expenses, as well as future renewal and replacement water expenses. It would increase residential rates by just over one percent annually, while cutting developer levies by three percent.
In addition, the governing panel is asked to approve a $25,000 public art contract with Krista Arendsen’s Art by Krista entity for creating a 90-foot-by-24-foot mural on the west wall of the Main Street Bicycle Company. It is hoped that the work could be done this fall, but it may be pushed back to next spring, depending on weather and other conditions.
The Zeeland City Council has a 5:30 PM Work-Study Session ahead of its 7 PM business meeting, both in chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
