ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 15, 2023) – Could tailpipe emission testing, road funding reductions and other air pollution restrictions be coming to Allegan County in 2024?
It could if proposed sanctions by the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, along with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, are enacted. In May, the two agencies labeled the western part of the county as a “non-attainment” area for air quality, meaning that pollutants were higher than federal maximums, based on data taken from an air quality station off of West 32nd Street in Laketown Township.
Last week, the public comment period on this report ended, but not before Allegan County Board Chairman Jim Storey, among others, sent a letter to those agencies objecting to possible sanctions on various grounds, including the location of the air quality station, and the source of the pollutants being from outside of the county.
A final decision on the matter may come by year’s end.
