The Hope College men’s tennis team served up national academic honors for the 2022-23 season. The Flying Dutchmen received Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors and had four individuals selected as ITA Scholar-Athletes: Austin Becksvoort, Jacob Burkett, Justin Fay and Matt Henkel.
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year;
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
Burkett and Henkel graduated in May.
Burkett played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and earned All-MIAA First Team honors. The Clarkston, Michigan, native (Clarkston HS) majored in business.
Henkel competed at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles and claimed All-MIAA Second team distinction. The Traverse City, Michigan, native (Traverse City Central) majored in business and economics.
Fay played No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. The junior from Naperville, Illinois (St. Francis) majors in computer science.
Becksvoort competed at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The sophomore from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) and Goldwater Scholarship recipient majors in chemistry and chemical engineering.
In 2023, 1,012 Division III men’s student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and 125 men’s tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
