HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 10, 2023) – Just what the Holland area needs is another road construction headache for motorists.
Beginning on Monday, the junction of East 8th Street and Chicago Drive on Holland’s Eastern Gateway will be rebuilt by the Ottawa County Road Commission. The $1.53 million project will reconfigure that intersection to remove the eastbound through lane and congregate all traffic to a signaled light, resurfacing the asphalt roadway, and repairing joints through the concrete portion from Fairbanks Avenue east to US-31. Although all roads will remain open to traffic during the project, there will be temporary lane closures as well as periodic flagging operations.
There was talk of putting in a roundabout at that junction which would have included Fairbanks Avenue, but as Holland City Manager Keith Van Beek admitted, that proposal proved to be an impractical one.
Also planned is the installation of a pedestrian sidewalk along the south side of East 8th, which would be done by Holland Township as part of an overall improvement plan for that vicinity.
Work is anticipated to last through September 22nd, depending on the weather.
As to the latest timetable for other major construction closures along the Lakeshore: I-196 from Byron Road to 32nd Avenue, eastbound lanes through September 30th; Byron Road from I-196 to 84th Avenue through July 22nd; 96th Avenue from Adams to Ottogan streets through November 10th; Chicago Drive/104th Avenue through August 25th; and 6th Street from River to Columbia Avenues through July 31st.
