LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 29, 2023) – Holding all the cards in Lansing for the first time in nearly four decades, majority Democrats in the legislature were able to get a budget to the Governor’s desk in time.
Wednesday’s passage of an $81.7 billion spending plan for Fiscal 2024 includes $15.2 billion in general fund expenditures and $19.4 billion for the School Aid Fund. Calling it a “Make it in Michigan” budget, Governor Whitmer claims that it, “will build a bright future for our state. I am so grateful to the new leadership in the legislature for getting this done. Let’s keep our foot on the accelerator.”
Not so fast, says Republican House Representative Greg Van Woerkom of Norton Shores.
While the Governor’s office says that the spending plan “provides a significant amount of one-time funding while maintaining a structural balance in future years, and does not utilize one-time funds for ongoing purposes,” Van Workom has his doubts about that.
Although the new budget year begins on October 1st, state law mandates that a proposed balanced budget be before the Governor for consideration by June 30th.
