ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 19, 2023) – Now that work on snowmelt in downtown Zeeland is underway, the task of charging those property owners who will benefit from having their sidewalks cleared of wintry weather conditions is underway.
While the costs of installing the snowmelt won’t be incurred by those owners, the city looks to place an annual operational assessment of 92 cents per square foot for maintenance, totaling just over $37,000 throughout the district. City officials had initially sought a $2.11 per square foot assessment, but an unexpected $1.5 million check received last month from the state’s Personal Property Tax reimbursement fund will help defray that levy.
City Council members, during Monday night’s scheduled biweekly business meeting, are expected to approve setting a July 17th date for a public hearing on the matter before a final vote on the assessment request. The snowmelt project, which began last Monday, is expected to be completed by November.
This 7 PM meeting in chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm Street) begins with a study session an hour beforehand. An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
