SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 12, 2023) – What may have been initially a setback for re-purposing a former radio tower into boosting cell service along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the Saugatuck area may not be much of a setback at all.
In documents ahead of tonight’s scheduled biweekly Saugatuck City Council meeting, City Manager Ryan Heise said that, as a result of an archaeology survey done as part of due diligence ahead of the project at Mt. Baldhead, some Native American artifacts discovered on the three test sites has forced a “Plan B” that would nix plans to install new restrooms at that location. “For some, this may be a disappointing setback, but I view this as part of the process, and a demonstration of the high-level professionalism provided by AT&T,” Heise wrote.
Tim Weststrate, AT&T’s External and Legislative Affairs lead for West and Southwest Michigan, has been involved in this project as well.
Heise added that, “No disappointment on city staff’s end and we have already started the pivot to meet the demand
for this critical infrastructure.”
This topic is part of the regularly-scheduled 7 PM meeting in the second-floor meeting room at Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). Heise will present his proposed municipal budget to Council in a special 6 PM session beforehand. Click on the highlighted words to access agendas and documents involving both meetings.
