JAMESTOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 8, 2023) – A 35-year-old Hudsonville man was seriously injured when a box truck lost control at an elementary school south of his hometown on Thursday afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Steigenga, a 75-year-old Grandville man, driving the truck northbound on 32nd Avenue around 12 Noon, lost control of the vehicle at Perry Street. The truck crossed over the center line, left the roadway, and headed into the parking lot of Forest Grove Elementary School, where it struck five parked vehicles and an Hudsonville Public Schools bus. The bus was empty at the time, as it was waiting for students to be dismissed on the last day of classes for the academic year.
The younger man was standing in between two of the parked vehicles, assisting a passenger out of one of those vehicles, when he was pinned by the force of the collision with the box truck. He was able to extricate himself, but he was taken by ambulance to an undisclosed “area hospital” for treatment.
Steigenga said that no one else was reportedly injured, including students or school staffers. He did not immediately mention the condition of the truck driver, or the circumstances which led to the truck losing control and crashing into the parked vehicles.
The incident remains under investigation.
