HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 6, 2023) – Part of the Holland skyline for decades will be gone by this fall.
Crews have been on the site of the decommissioned James DeYoung Power Plant off of Pine Avenue for weeks, preparing for the demolition of the structure that was built in 1939 and generated electricity through coal and natural gas before closing six years ago with the opening of Holland Energy Park near the Eastern Gateway. According to City Manager Keith Van Beek, that teardown began prior to last month’s vote that approved a land swap with GDK in which the site would become the new home of the Verplank Dock operations, while the current dock location would turn into a mixed-use development which would purportedly improve public access to Lake Macatawa.
Work on removing hazardous materials was completed in April, and the entire project is expected to come in about $800,000 under the $6.5 million budgeted for the building’s demolition.
