HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 19, 2023) – Addressing fair housing in the city of Holland was the subject of a public workshop at City Hall on Thursday night.
Staffers with the city’s Community and Neighborhood Services office conducted the session, which went over instances where barriers were created to prevent individuals from obtaining housing in the Tulip City, as according to the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, 13 such cases were investigated in a 12-month period that ended last June.
“Housing is a basic need, and it’s important that all persons experience fair and legal treatment in their pursuit of housing. For the benefit of all residents, but in particular those more likely to experience differential treatment, it’s critical that there is a broad understanding among the public and housing providers of the various local, state, and federal laws designed to protect people seeking to obtain or maintain housing. The better we understand where the barriers exist, the better chance we have of being able to address and remediate those barriers,” – Mark Kornelis, City of Holland Community Development Coordinator.
Jay Peters has been involved in this issue for far longer than the 16 years he has been a Second Ward City Councilman.
More information on fair housing is available through the CNS office (616-355-1330).
