LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 18, 2023) – A scourge among gardeners along the Lakeshore is garlic mustard.
Last Saturday, a number of volunteers spent three hours combing the five-acre Castle Park Nature Reserve in Laketown Township in an effort to eradicate this invasive species that originally came from Europe and Asia. Their task was made tougher by a mile-long hike from Laketown Beach to reach the reserve that is ringed by private property, as the only public access is along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Garlic mustard is a weed we can do without, according to Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland.
Castle Park Reserve is part of a 50-acre-plus lakeshore habitat natural area that includes the Dune Pines Nature Preserve and a privately-held conservation easement, all of which has been designated as a critical dune area by the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, which held last Saturday’s garlic mustard roundup.
