Alden Barkel, 95, of Holland, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2023.
He was born in Overisel on February 16, 1928, to Silas and Sadie Barkel. Hester and Alden raised their children on the family farm in Overisel.
Alden was a loving husband, father, and treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Hester, visiting all 50 states. Alden worked on his farm in Overisel and drove truck for many years, retiring from Holland Motor Express. He was a long-time member of Overisel Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and elder and helped with the building of the new church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Hester, his daughter Connie Kleinheksel, and his siblings: Elgene Vanden Brink, Elmer Barkel, and Norman Barkel.
Surviving Alden are his daughters: Kristi and Bryan Sale, Lu Ann and Jerry Broekhuis, his son-in-law Randy Kleinheksel, his Brazilian exchange student Monica Barbosa, grandchildren: Nicole (Kyle) Brink, Robb (Krista) Kleinheksel, Brooke (Jon) Ludema, Darci (Kyle) Vander Slik, Todd (Katelyn) Broekhuis, Chad (Kelly) Broekhuis, Joni (Ben) Van Maastricht; 15 great-grandchildren; brother Vern and Joyce Barkel; his brother-in-law Allen Klingenberg, sister-in-law Myke Barkel, and many extended family.
Alden’s family would like to thank the staff at Vista Springs and Hospice of Holland for the loving care given to him.
Visitation will be 6-8 Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Overisel Reformed Church, 4706 142nd Street, Holland. The funeral service will be 11 am Friday, May 12, 2023, also at Overisel Reformed Church. Interment will be in Overisel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Overisel Reformed Church. www.yntemafh.com
