Four from Hope College have claimed MIAA Athlete of the Week honors: Caden Brainard in men’s lacrosse, Liam Casey in men’s golf, Ana Tucker in women’s track and Maddie Yakes in women’s lacrosse.
Brainard (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer HS) is the MIAA Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
The sophomore engineering major and face-off specialist won 75.6 percent of faceoffs he took and averaged 8 ½ ground balls during two Flying Dutchmen victories last week. On Saturday, Brainard went 15-for-20 on faceoffs and collected nine ground balls during a 20-5 victory against visiting Kalamazoo College. On Tuesday, Brainard went 19-of-25 on faceoffs and totaled eight ground balls during a 15-9 win at Adrian College.
Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) is the MIAA Men’s Golfer of the Week for the third time this season and in his career.
The freshman carded the lowest 36-hole score during the MIAA Tournament on Friday and Saturday and helped the Flying Dutchmen finish first out of four teams to earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.
Casey carded a 3-over-par 68 at Wuskowhan Players Club on Saturday and posted a 73 on Friday. Casey topped the nearest golfer by one stroke.
Tucker (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) is the MIAA Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.
The senior exercise science major and runner clocked the fastest 1,500-meter time in NCAA Division III on Friday at the Grand Valley State University Al Owens Classic. Tucker’s run of 4 minutes, 25.22 seconds was a school record as well.
Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) is the MIAA Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the third time in her career.
The junior made 27 saves last week during victories against Albion College and Calvin University with a save percentage of .628. On Saturday, Yakes totaled a season-high 17 saves during a 16-9 victory at Calvin. On Wednesday, Yakes totaled 10 saves during a 16-7 win vs. visiting Adrian.
