GEORGETOWN TWP. MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 17, 2023) – Clean up efforts in waters north of Jenison are ongoing.
The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Department announced on Monday that a project that will take “several weeks” for removing oil from a lake in the Bend Area Open Space is underway. Last Monday, a kayaker contacted the department about a petroleum-like sheen along nearly 300 yards of shoreline. Sheriff’s Department drones didn’t spot any ongoing leaks to add to that sheen, and last Wednesday, the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy retained environmental services provider Taplin Group to clean up the area.
In addition, EGLE’s Oil, Gas and Mineral Division is looking into long-standing oil wells in the area as a possible source of this sheen, hoping to prevent any future issues. The OCPR added that “it doesn’t appear to be impacting any other waterways or shorelines.
