LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 7, 2023) – The moving to clean energy has stalled in one Lakeshore community.
On Wednesday evening, the Laketown Township board agreed to halt any further discussion into a proposal for installing 48 solar panels at the Township Hall off of Beeline Road, at a cost of over $53,000, despite tax rebates. The panels would have powered operations at the township offices, but opposition from nearby residents helped the trustees decide that now is not the time for such a move.
Township Manager Al Meshkin had pitched the 21.6 kilowatt idea in January, saying that a larger system at the Felt Mansion has created few problems, and that the setup would pay for itself in 13 years. Opponents cited the lengthy time for such a payback, as well as on aesthetic concerns and perceived property value loss, for asking the board to reject the proposal.
Although the trustees said no to solar power at the Township Hall right now, the matter could be brought up again at a unspecified future date.
