ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 6, 2023) – A member of the Saugatuck City Council has a court date in Allegan later this month on an election law violation charge.
Garnet Lewis was arraigned on Monday in Allegan District Court on a misdemeanor count of failing to report a violation on nominating or initiative petitions stemming from last July. She is currently free on a $1,000 bond, with a preliminary hearing slated for April 27th.
Lewis, a Democrat who had three times run unsuccessfully for the state legislature in Saugatuck and in mid-Michigan, is currently a second-term city council member who served as Mayor for 2021. She was also appointed to the Michigan Travel Commission this past February for a three-year term, and is currently the owner of a market/eatery and a real estate firm in the Saugatuck area.
There has been no public word thus far as to whether Lewis will remain on the City Council while her case is being heard, or whether she would be seeking a third two-year term on that governing panel this fall.
