PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Portage Northern High School senior is suing the school for scheduling graduation on May 26, which is Shavuot.
The Jewish holiday celebrates when God gave the Torah to the Jewish people, and 18-year-old Minaleah Koffron says Portage Public Schools are violating the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, the Michigan Constitution, and the U.S. Constitution by not changing the date.
A hearing is set for this afternoon to possibly reschedule the ceremony. Interim principal Nate Ledlow told the family he would look at other dates on March 3, but court documents say on March 8 he admitted to them he never intended to look into them without an order from the superintendent.
Koffron says if the scheduling of graduation on the holiday was an oversight, “the decision to keep it is not.”
