PAW PAW, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 29, 2023) – A 28-year-old Otsego man is behind bars after attempting to elude authorities south of the Lakeshore overnight.
According to Van Buren County Sheriff’s Sergeant Paul Graham, a deputy attempted a traffic stop of a vehicle for a obstructed plate violation on County Road 388, near 32nd Street in Pine Grove Township, around 11:50 PM on Tuesday. However, when the overhead lights in the Sheriff’s prowl car went on, the suspect turned off his own lights and sped off.
The chase reached speeds of about 100 miles per hour during a 15-minute pursuit into Kalamazoo County, which included the suspect’s vehicle striking a deer. That collision, along with the deployment of spike strips by Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Deputies, slowed the chase to between 30-45 mph before the suspect’s vehicle pulled into a gas station off of D Avenue and US-131, where an arrest was made without further incident.
There were no injuries reported during the pursuit. The unnamed suspect is in the Van Buren County Jail awaiting arraignment on charges of operating on a suspended license and fleeing and eluding a police officer.
