Gloria Cyr Maddox, 99, entered into eternal life on Saturday, March 18, 2023. She had been living at St. Ann’s Home in Grand Rapids.
Gloria was born in Crookston, MN on November 3, 1923, to Fred and Dora Cyr. She attended St. Joseph’s Academy in Crookston, and St. Teresa’s College in Winona, MN, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in French and minors in Spanish and history. She then took a job as a translator at the French Consulate in Chicago. Here, Gloria met her first husband, Joseph A. Prindaville. They were married at Holy Name Cathedral in 1948, and settled in Homewood, on Chicago’s South Side. They were blessed with two children, Fred and Jodi. Joe developed Parkinson’s Disease in his early 50s and Gloria very lovingly cared for him for 14 years until he passed into eternal life in 1981. In 1984, Gloria married widower Eugene H. Cahill. They moved to Holland, MI in 1990. They had 10 happy years together until Gene entered heaven in 1994. In 2000, Gloria met her third husband, V. Harold “Vic” Maddox, in Holland at the Hope Academy of Senior Professionals (HASP). They married in 2001 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and had 9 happy years together until his passing into eternal life in 2010.
Gloria was a long-time member of Our Lady of the Lake and attended daily Mass with regularity. She generously supported both her church and Corpus Christi Catholic School. Faith and family were of the greatest importance in her life. She also enjoyed traveling, attending HASP events, and playing tennis, golf, and Rummikub. She loved anything French, beautiful hats, her husbands, good food, and chocolate! One of her most admirable qualities was her dedication as a caregiver. She cared for each of her husbands – Joe Prindaville, Gene Cahill, and Vic Maddox – as well as her sister, Jackie Miller, with tenderness and compassion until each of their deaths.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Dora Cyr, her sister, Jacqueline Cyr Miller, and her husbands, Joseph A. Prindaville, Eugene H. Cahill, and V. Harold “Vic” Maddox. She is survived by her son, Dr. Fred (Pat) Prindaville of Concordia, KS, and her daughter Jodi P. (Dr. John) DeMott of Holland, MI. She is further survived by seven grandchildren: Mark DeMott of Chicago, IL; Paul DeMott of San Clemente, CA; Dr. Brea Prindavillle (Greg Souza) of Providence, RI; Mary DeMott of Dubuque, IA; Shelby Prindaville of Sioux City, IA; Joseph (Kate) DeMott of Columbia, SC; and Annie DeMott of South Bend, IN; as well as great-grandchildren Johnny, Grace, Luca, and Liam DeMott.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at St. Ann’s Home, under the direction of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, with special thanks to Sister Annunciata, Sister Mary Judith, Sister Mary Kathleen, Sister Maria Goretti, Renee TenEyck and Jake Jazwinski.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 480 152nd Avenue, Holland, MI at 11:00 AM with Fr. Michael Burt presiding. Visitation will precede the funeral, beginning at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to St. Ann’s Home, 2161 Leonard Street NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504 or to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in memory of Gloria C. Maddox.
