LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 10, 2023) – Ottawa County’s ongoing effort to preserve farmland is getting a financial boost from Lansing.
The Michigan Agricultural Preservation Farm Board on Thursday awarded $1.1 million to four West Michigan counties for purchasing and maintaining agricultural conservation easements. A total of 24 programs had submitted applications for these funds, and the money will help ensure communities have a locally sustainable source of fresh food, while keeping jobs in the agriculture community.
Ottawa County is in line for nearly $268,000, which will go towards the county’s Farmland Preservation Fund and its Purchase of Development Rights Program, according to the county’s Agriculture and Economic Resources Coordinator Becky Huttenga.
The rest of this state grant will be distributed to Kent, Berrien and Barry counties.
