OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 3, 2023) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two separate animal cruelty complaints that were recently received into its headquarters in West Olive.
The first came early last month about a dog that was purportedly neglected in a bathroom at a unit in the 48th West complex just west of the Grand Valley State University campus. After an initial visit from a sheriff’s deputy resulted in no change to the canine’s condition, animal control officers returned this past Sunday and took the Boxer to the Harbor Humane Society campus for treatment. A veterinarian there noted that the dog was underweight and dehydrated. Following a review by the county prosecutor’s office, a 25-year-old Allendale man was arrested on Friday on animal cruelty charges and lodged in the county jail.
The second occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when an animal control deputy was dispatched to the area of 104th Avenue near Osborn Street in Robinson Township on a report of a malnourished dog in the vicinity of the Bass River Recreational Area. The brown-colored, mixed-breed canine was spotted with injuries to its face and jaw, and a subsequent surgery on Thursday revealed a bullet in its jaw that was successfully removed. The animal is recovering at Harbor Humane Society, and the search is on for the dog’s owner.
Both cases remain open, and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
