Five Hope College student-athletes have claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors: men’s tennis senior Jacob Burkett, men’s basketball senior Evan Thomas, women’s basketball senior Ella McKinney, women’s field sophomore Greta Robrahn, and women’s track freshman Sara Schermerhorn.
This is the seventh career MIAA weekly honor and the second of the season for Thomas. This is the second MIAA weekly honor for McKinney, Robrahn, and Schermerhorn. This is the first one for Burkett.
Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston) went 2-0 on the weekend vs. NAIA opponent Lawrence Tech. At No. 1 doubles, Burkett won 8-3 with partner Cameron Coates. He later notched a three-set victory at the No. 1 singles spot (4-6, 6-1, 7-5).
Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos HS) helped the Flying Dutchmen win the MIAA Tournament title and clinch a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament by averaging 15.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists over three games last week.
During the championship game win against Calvin University, Thomas totaled 14 points, four rebounds, and one assist. During the semifinal win against Trine University, the biology major recorded a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds as well as one assist. During the quarterfinal win against Adrian College, Thomas collected 14 points and a season-high seven assists.
McKinney (Haslett, Michigan / Haslett) aided the Flying Dutch’s run to an MIAA Tournament title and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance by averaging 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds over two games last week.
During a championship game win against Trine, McKinney totaled 15 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. During a semifinal win against Albion, the biology major scored a team-best 17 points and eight rebounds as well as collecting three steals and two assists.
Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) became Hope’s first MIAA indoor champion in the shot put and contributed to the Flying Dutch’s fourth team championship in six years.
The health and physical education major tossed a winning throw of 12.61 meters (41 feet, 4 ½ inches).
Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West) was a part of three first-place runs during the league meet, earning her first MIAA Championship title with a meet-record time of 7.82 seconds in the 60-meter dash. The previous record of 7.87 was set by Albion’s Avery Campbell last year.
Schermerhorn broke her second MIAA record of the day in the 200m dash with a sprint of 25.55 seconds. The previous record of 25.69 was set in 2018 by Albion’s Layla Wilks.
Schermerhorn also competed in the winning 4×400 relay.
