GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 22, 2023) – After a several-week lull, wintry weather is expected back along the Lakeshore with authority on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Ottawa County, and an Ice Storm Warning for Allegan County. Both cautions are for an 18-hour period, from 10 AM Wednesday through 4 AM on Thursday.
For Ottawa County and points north and east, forecasters are predicting a total sleet and snow accumulation of one to three inches, with ice accumulating of one tenth to four tenths of an inch. For Allegan County and points south and east, significant icing of up to a half inch is expected, with snow and sleet accumulating up to an inch. Winds may be gusting as high as 45 miles per hour throughout the region.
The ice and winds could not only snap power lines and tree limbs, but would impact travel, especially during the Wednesday evening commute. Travel experts say that motorists should have a flashlight, food and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency, and that all residents should have their cellular phones fully charged in case of power outages.
As a result of these forecasts, which came out during the day on Tuesday, all local school districts on Tuesday evening issued cancellation notices of no classes for Wednesday, with such cautions possibly extending into Thursday as well. A scheduled biweekly Holland City Council work study session for Wednesday evening has also been called off, perhaps due to the weather.
Forecasters say that the storm should move out of the region by Thursday evening.
