Sharon Smith, age 80, of Saugatuck, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023.
Ms. Smith was a long-time resident of Saugatuck. She was well known for hosting family and friends on her riverfront home. Her door was always open to anyone who stopped by. She made history by becoming the first woman to retire from the Holland post office. Ms. Smith was known for her solid work ethic. She kept in contact with her former co-workers with monthly luncheons and fellowships that she truly enjoyed. After her retirement, she continued in public service by working in home health care. Sharon had an easy smile, a great sense of humor, and a straightforward personality. She was truly a blessing to be around and to spend time with. Sharon loved the water and she always said that her boat was her paradise. Ms. Smith was also an excellent cook and she often fished for her own perch. Everyone also knew that she had a deep love for animals, inside and out. Dogs were known to stop at her house for treats and even ducks would stop and tap on her door if she was not outside with a treat. Sharon loved and adored her family. She held them close to her heart. Everyone that knew her loved her and she will truly be missed by everyone in the Saugatuck community.
Surviving are her children, Mark Hall, Robin Bell, Kristin VanderYacht, and Shane (Kristi) Smith; grandchildren, Ashley (Shawn) Janik, Justine Liupakka, Stephanie (Jake) Allen, Ross Liupakka, Paige Smith, Alec Smith and Isabella Smith; four great-grandchildren; sister, Gaytha Ross, and many nieces and nephews.
Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her mother, Agatha Beard, and father Henry Robert Rydt; sister, Jovay Ross, and brother Donald Ross.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, February 21, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, at Community Church of Douglas, 6874 Wiley Road, Fennville, Michigan. A service will follow visitation at 2:00 pm. Pastor Brandon Beebe presiding. At the conclusion of the church ceremony a funeral procession will make its way from the church to Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck for a graveside service and interment.
