GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 7, 2023) – Three teens from Grand Rapids remain behind bars after arraignment on charges stemming from a burglary of a smoke shop in Coopersville and subsequent police chase on Monday.
Malik Vander and Benjamin Orlando Clark III, both 19, and 18-year-old Saivon Mitchell were arraigned on Tuesday via video on Breaking and Entering and Resisting and Obstructing counts, with Grand Haven District Court Judge Craig Bunce ordering them held on $80,000 bond each. A fourth unnamed suspect from Grand Rapids, aged 16, is having his case heard through the county’s juvenile justice system.
The four are accused of breaking into the Funky Monkey off of Randall Street around 2:15 AM, taking over $5,000 in merchandise, and then attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle before crashing it during a police chase on I-96 near Marne. They surrendered in a church’s out building after being tracked by an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department canine unit.
It is believed that the four may be also involved in similar incidents in and around the Grand Rapids area, as the case is being investigated by several law enforcement entities.
