DOUGLAS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 7, 2023) – Attempting to elude the law south of Douglas this past Sunday evening led to the hospitalization of a 25-year-old Muskegon man and a 34-year-old Traverse City woman, with criminal charges possibly forthcoming.
According to the office of Douglas Police Chief Steven Kent, one of his department’s officers had spotted a southbound vehicle on Blue Star Highway near Main Street just before 10:30 PM “observing motor vehicle code violations and suspicious behavior occurring inside of the vehicle.” The officer did pull that vehicle over, but as he left his prowl car to approach the vehicle, it sped off and continued its southbound course.
As the chase passed the intersection of M-89, the suspect vehicle drove through the four-way stop and lost control, veering to the right and into a ditch. It then struck a private driveway and went airborne, landing on an adjacent driveway.
The man driving the suspect vehicle was first taken to Holland Hospital and then to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, while the woman was flown to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
Kent’s office said that the suspect vehicle had been reported as stolen from the Traverse City area. The case remains under investigation, and the findings will be forwarded to the office of Allegan County Prosecutor Myrene Koch for consideration of charges.
